“Unable to remain seated comfortably in her wheelchair for several years, a new approach was required”
I’m an occupational therapist with Northern Occupational Therapy in Australia and have over 20 years of experience in neurological rehabilitation.
My client has been unable to remain comfortably seated in a wheelchair for several years, despite having had customized pressure redistributing seating, moulded to reflect her contours. After only 12 months of prescription the wheelchair became too uncomfortable, meaning she spent most of her days back in bed. A new approach was required to give her postural support in combination with high pressure relief. And yet this new seating solution had to have the flexibility that enabled my client to move within the chair without the new seated position creating pressure points due to the customized, ‘fixed’, moulded seating being unable to yield to her contours.
“We needed a seating system that had the flexibility to accommodate her posture, irrespective of the position she placed herself in – so we approached Vicair”
We needed a system that had the flexibility to accommodate her posture, irrespective of the position she placed herself in -as she is unable to then reposition herself- without needing to replace the whole seating system. Michael Boulton, equipment representative, and I approached Vicair with an idea for an overlay and they embraced the concept.
